Spaying or neutering your pets is the best thing you can do to help animals. Millions of pets are abandoned at shelters every year. Shelters are constantly at full capacity, due to people not spaying or neutering their pets. The huge overpopulation of animals can be minimized by not allowing pets to breed.

Spaying and neutering not only decreases the overpopulation of pets but decreases health issues in pets too. Females who are spayed prior to going into heat have almost a zero risk of breast and uterine cancer. Males who are neutered are less likely to develop testicular or prostate cancer. Neutered males will not display undesirable behaviors, such as marking, spraying, or humping.

Homes are available for only so many pets. Breeding animals is likely to be a death sentence for many in the litter. If homes can not be found for all of the litter-mates, they will end up in a shelter. If not adopted from the shelter, the unfortunate reality is that the animal will be put to sleep. People will often purchase a young pet and give the animal away when they discover how time-consuming training can be. Older cats and dogs have even a more difficult time finding a new home than their younger counterparts.

Many individuals deal with allergies, but would dearly love to have a pet. Allergy sufferers, take heart, for there are a variety of wonderful pets known to keep your allergies at bay.
For those who have their hearts set on a dog, there are several great options. While no dog is completely allergy-free, breeds such as Bedlington Terriers have hair that grows rather than fur that sheds, making them particularly low in allergens; Poodles and Schnauzers are also great examples of hypo-allergenic pooches. Remember that these breeds need to have their hair trimmed regularly, but allergy sufferers will benefit greatly with their low allergen levels.
Several cat breeds are known for their lower allergens, as well; the Siberian, Oriental Shorthair, Balinese, and Javanese breeds are a few good options to consider.
When looking for hairless pet options, turtles, lizards, and fish are known to be completely dander-free and can make fun pets, as well.
Remember, when choosing any pet, it is extremely important to consider the various characteristics of each breed to ensure you choose the pet that is best suited to your home and lifestyle.
With time and research, you are sure to find the pet that is perfect for you.

When deciding to bring a pet into your family, choosing the perfect pet name can sometimes be a very hard decision. The best way to choose a pet name is to first get to know your pet. Personality is key to choosing a name. Give your pet a few days to let its personality shine through and that will help you in choosing a name. There are thousands of databases online to help you in choosing the perfect pet name. It also may help you to try a few different names over the course of the first few days to see which one best suits your pet.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . There are some traits of your pet that can aid in choosing the name also. Sex, size, breed, color, and their purpose in your life can often lead to great pet names. Also maybe a personal experience that you relate to your pet will make a great choice. Just remember that whatever name you do choose will be used many many times a day. Make sure the name is something you are okay with repeating over and over and in front of anyone because until your pet learns its name it will be repeated many times.

Furry friends become family quick, but that first night can be terrifying for an animal. Animals don’t understand anything other than “I’m not where I’ve been. Where am I? What’s that smell? And, who are these people?”

I once brought two new puppies home the same day and let me tell you: it’s hard work. It is worth it though. Here are a few tips that I’ve learned from years as a pet owner to help you, and your new buddy, acclimate to life together.

Prepare ahead of time. Find out what food they have been eating and make sure to have it on hand.This/tag helps explain it more. Buy a crate if you are getting a puppy, or other dog that is not yet house trained. Make sure it is in an area of the home that is quiet but still accessible. Go ahead and have some toys and treats on hand to coax you pet into a trusting relationship.

Bring them early in the day. Try and make sure you have several hours to establish a bond with your new animal before turning all the lights out and leaving them on their own for eight hours and let them explore the new surroundings in depth, inside and outdoors. Even if you don’t plan on letting the rule the roost immediately, if they have a sense of where they are they may be less likely to whine the whole night.

And speaking of whining the whole night…They may do just that. Be sympathetic and try and remember that they have just been taken away from everything they know.

After a few days and nights you new pet will learn to trust you and you will form a bond that last a lifetime.

Are you tired of playing tug-of-war with your dog? If so, here are a few strategies to end the war. Purchase a leash that is suitable for your dog’s size and strength. After finding the perfect leash, buy some treats for your walk. Now its time to get started! Assert yourself right away. Chose a starting point and do not move until your dog is completely still. If the tugging continues, hold your ground until they settle down. Begin walking at a comfortable pace; but as soon as your dog begins to tug, come to a complete stop. Once the tension from the leash is gone, continue walking. Each time your dog walks side-by-side with you, hand him/her a treat. The second option is to wrap most of the leash around your hand, leaving only 5-6 inches available. Walk at a slow pace and firmly keep your dog by your side. After your pup stops pulling, release 1 or 2 inches of the leash. If they begin pulling again, tighten it once more. Don’t forget to reward good behavior! Choose one of these patterns and in no time, your dog will learn how to go for a walk at your pace.

You’ve done your research, you’ve thought about it and you’ve gotten all the supplies you’re going to need. Finally, the day has come where you get your pet and bring them home. While it’s exciting to start to immediately play with your pet and jump right in to pet ownership, on the first day it’s the exact opposite that you want to do.

The first and foremost thing that you will need to do is show your pet where it can find basic necessities; food, water, litter box if it’s a cat, etc. Once that is taken care of, the next most important thing to do is leave your pet alone. Like humans, animals need time to acclimate themselves to new surroundings; new smells, colors, sounds, sights, etc. By not giving your pet this time on the first day (or even first two days), you risk making your pet skittish or nervous which will be counterproductive to the bonding process.

Having a pet is a lifelong commitment full of fun but to get the most out of it, you have to start off on the right foot. Giving your pet the space it needs is the most important thing you can do.

Dogs are amazing pets that provide an abundance of warmth and love to the family. It is important, however, to choose the right dog for your family to ensure that the dog is given the best living environment. There are different dog breeds that work best with certain types of families. One factor that should be considered when finding a new dog is your family’s schedule. While dogs should be receiving a lot of attention, some dog breeds are more able to be alone for long durations than other dog breeds. If your family is gone for long periods of time, then you may want to get a low energy dog, like a bulldog, who will do best by staying in the home. Another factor to consider is the amount of grooming you are willing to give your new dog. People who want to have short-haired dogs that require little grooming should adopt dogs like staffordshire bull terriers. People who like long-haired dogs and are willing to groom the coat may get dogs like shih tzus and poodles. No matter which dog you adopt, you will need to spend a considerable amount of time training it and giving it affection.
