The Importance of Spaying or Neutering Your Pet
Spaying or neutering your pets is the best thing you can do to help animals. Millions of pets are abandoned at shelters every year. Shelters are constantly at full capacity, due to people not spaying or neutering their pets. The huge overpopulation of animals can be minimized by not allowing pets to breed.
Spaying and neutering not only decreases the overpopulation of pets but decreases health issues in pets too. Females who are spayed prior to going into heat have almost a zero risk of breast and uterine cancer. Males who are neutered are less likely to develop testicular or prostate cancer. Neutered males will not display undesirable behaviors, such as marking, spraying, or humping.
Homes are available for only so many pets. Breeding animals is likely to be a death sentence for many in the litter. If homes can not be found for all of the litter-mates, they will end up in a shelter. If not adopted from the shelter, the unfortunate reality is that the animal will be put to sleep. People will often purchase a young pet and give the animal away when they discover how time-consuming training can be. Older cats and dogs have even a more difficult time finding a new home than their younger counterparts.
