How to Master Loose-Leash Walking Today

Are you tired of playing tug-of-war with your dog? If so, here are a few strategies to end the war. Purchase a leash that is suitable for your dog’s size and strength. After finding the perfect leash, buy some treats for your walk. Now its time to get started! Assert yourself right away. Chose a starting point and do not move until your dog is completely still. If the tugging continues, hold your ground until they settle down. Begin walking at a comfortable pace; but as soon as your dog begins to tug, come to a complete stop. Once the tension from the leash is gone, continue walking. Each time your dog walks side-by-side with you, hand him/her a treat. The second option is to wrap most of the leash around your hand, leaving only 5-6 inches available. Walk at a slow pace and firmly keep your dog by your side. After your pup stops pulling, release 1 or 2 inches of the leash. If they begin pulling again, tighten it once more. Don’t forget to reward good behavior! Choose one of these patterns and in no time, your dog will learn how to go for a walk at your pace.
